Background & History

The evolution of school safety initiatives that led to the establishment of the Plateau State Safe Schools Program.

2024-Present

Baseline Assessment Implementation

PSSSP launched the Assessment of Compliance to Minimum Standards for Safe Schools in partnership with the Plateau State Universal Education Board, deploying 66 enumerators, 7 supervisors, and 3 zonal coordinators across 17 Local Government Areas.

April 2023

Establishment of PSSSP

Considering the situation of schools in Plateau State and the increasing spate of violence, Governor Caleb Mutfwang established the Plateau State Safe Schools Program under the direction of the Secretary to the State Government, with a State Coordinator appointed to head the office.

2020

National Policy on Safety, Security and Violence-Free Schools

The National Policy on Safety, Security and Violence-Free Schools (NPSSVFS) was developed, providing clear procedures for protecting learners from all forms of hazards, violence and exploitation, with guidelines on safety infrastructure in times of peace and conflict.

2019

Nigeria Ratifies Safe Schools Declaration

Under the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, Nigeria became the 37th country to endorse the Safe Schools Declaration, paving the way for domestication through national policy development.

May 2015

Safe Schools Declaration

The governments of Norway and Argentina led a process among UN Member States to develop the Safe Schools Declaration, an inter-governmental political agreement dedicated to protecting education in armed conflict. It was opened for endorsement at the First International Conference on Safe Schools in Oslo, Norway.

May 2014

Chibok Abduction & Safe Schools Initiative

Following the abduction of 276 schoolgirls from Government Secondary School Chibok, it became imperative for the Nigerian government to set guidelines protecting the right to education. The Safe Schools Initiative (SSI) was launched as an immediate response to attacks against education in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States.

Our Mandate

The Plateau State Safe Schools Program is mandated to carry out the following key functions.

Coordinate and implement school safety programs and initiatives across all 17 Local Government Areas of Plateau State.

Conduct comprehensive safety assessments of schools to evaluate compliance with minimum national safety standards.

Develop and implement early warning systems and emergency response protocols for school safety incidents.

Build capacity through training programs for teachers, school administrators, and community stakeholders on safety practices.

Mobilize communities and establish school-based safety committees for sustainable local ownership of safety initiatives.

Collect, analyze, and utilize data for evidence-based planning, monitoring, and evaluation of safety interventions.

Collaborate with security agencies, civil society organizations, and development partners to strengthen school safety systems.

Advocate for policy reforms and resource allocation to support sustainable school safety infrastructure and programs.
